A promotion at Storm

Not surprisingly, this blog has seen little activity. But I figured it's worth posting some press around my recent promotion. Perhaps the news hook is less sexy than my stint at In-Q-Tel (also mentioned here), but I'm extremely excited to be part of Storm Ventures.

A new year...

We successfully graduated from Columbia Business School in May of 2005. After taking a two-year postponed honeymoon, we finally headed west back to the Bay Area. Lydia landed at Mckinsey's Silicon Valley Office, and Ben settled in up the street at In-Q-Tel. Our favorite past-time is trying to get ourselves in the same city. Second runner-up is our ever-expanding renovation project in our new home.

Katrina medial relief

We're proud of Ben's father and oldest brother for serving Katrina victims in Kenner, LA. They're working side-by-side as doctors in a medical relief team sponsored by Menlo Park Presbyterian Church. Enoch is blogging their experiences here.

The Proposal Moment

Then I looked at Ben and found him no longer sitting beside me, but instead on one knee before me. The words he used to express his feelings are a blur in my mind now, but I remember feeling beyond overwhelmed and on the verge of tears at this incredible show of emotion and faith in our relationship. He finished his statement by asking me to be his wife and held a sparkling diamond engagement ring before me. I remember taking a deep breath before trying to say yes with all of my being and as much composure I could muster. We kissed and suddenly came a loud cry of whoops and cheers from a crowd nearby.

You're @#*% engaged?!
Yep, we're engaged. Ben Choi proposed to me, Lydia Cheng, on August 6, 2002, taking me completely by surprise with a video billboard proposal in downtown Singapore before a group of our friends. We're both still getting used to saying “My Fiancé”. And catching sight of the ring still renders me moonstruck. (Ben: and I'm simply relieved she said yes.)

We wish we could have told you in person or over the phone, but the 12 to 15 hour time difference gets in the way, so please forgive us sharing this personal news over this impersonal medium. We'd like to invite you to view a video of the moment of the proposal (courtesy of our good friend Shawn) and hope it will help you further share in our joy. We'll be posting some other key parts of the special evening on a newly-created website BenAndLydia.com for your interest as well (yes, courtesy of my embarrassingly tech-handy fiancé - I get to say “fiancé” again! Hee hee!).
